So much time, so little to do...
It's Sunday. It's Advent, too, and I really tried to make it to church this morning, but my bus took nearly 45 minutes to fill up and didn't make it. But I'm still in Karak. I got a lovely package from Aunt Sherry, (thank you thank you!) and the weather today is just marvelous. I've had an interesting week. After Madaba, I hit up the PC office for books and such, then went to C-town (grocery store, like the ones in America) and had a great time. I bought a whole head of lettuce (doesn't exist in Karak or Safi), a whole bunch of beautiful veggies, real cheddar cheese, etc. I ate salads for three days straight, and it was fantastic.
Another volunteer left, making it 7 people gone from Karak alone. There are 4 of us left in the region. No comment.
I got some text messages from friends in NYC who shall remain nameless. I appreciate the thought at 5am (my time), but next time, just put it in an email! It's becoming sad; I'm always so excited to check my email, but I rarely have emails!!! ARG! I shouldn't complain, things could be worse. If my friends have forgotten me, then let it be so.
I've been visiting my stalker's family quite often, which is nice. They live a few blocks away, and they're a real nice family. Ten kids, mom, dad, aunt, and oldest daughter's husband all live in a two and a half room house. They are so hospitable! One of the brothers works at Wadi Rum, taking tourists on camping trips, so his English is really good.
Oh, biggest news--my sister has asked me to her maid of honor! Well, I'm sharing the title with Andrea, which is totally understandable, because I'm not there and won't be there to help with the wedding preparations, but Andrea will be. Anyways, it's very exciting for me, I've never been in a wedding party before.
As far as work goes... I'm starting a book club with the help of my mom and the embassy. Should be interesting.
It's wedding season in Safi again...wedding pre-parties on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the actual wedding parties on Thursdays. The rest of the country usually has their weddings on Fridays, but Safi is special. I was invited to one last week, but didn't go because I was exhausted. They are comprised of really loud music, fireworks, dancing, and millions of kids running around screaming. Good times.
I had a really bad experience with a bus driver a couple days ago. He tried to rip me off, and blatantly said he was charging me an outrageous price because I was a foreigner. And an American. I was so frustrated, but luckily a woman sitting behind me called him an animal, shamed his family, and got me off the bus after I paid the normal price.
Some of the nurses at the hospital who I teach on Saturdays offered to help me with my Arabic, which is great. They live in a little boarding house during the week, and go home to their families in Karak on weekends. Nice women.
And Majeda got a marriage proposal!!! If her father and brothers accept, she's going to move to Aqaba with her fiancee. So...that means we'll either get a new boss or Fatima will take over. Either way, I'm happy for Majeda and I think a change will be interesting.
Ok, time to go.
Less than two weeks and I'll be in Cairo with the fam! So exciting.
