Progress, despite the weather

I had dinner with two workers from Habitat for Humanity last night, and it was so great! Not only did I get to speak English all night, but we worked out some deals to get me helping them, and them helping me. We discussed new projects, and they're so energetic, and realistic, and it was very very reassuring. They don't live in Safi, but they have a house there that they share with other H4H workers who have projects in the area.
Anyways, I'm super happy with the discussion we had, and I am really looking forward to working with them. They also are putting me in touch with this woman in Safi who apparently runs a women's center and speaks amazing English. I also choked on my food when I heard that. There's a woman's center?! And no one told me?!
Majeda has been MIA for a week now. No one seems to care that she's gone. I understand she's really busy now that she's engaged and is preparing for the marriage and move to the UAE, but it's a bit strange to have her just disappear for so long without prior warning.
I have a meeting on Sunday with Irada, a government group that helps with employment and water conservation and job training. I know everyone at their office really well, but we set up the meeting to actually talk about a program with my center girls, because whenever I drop by the office, we usually end up gossiping about everything and everyone except a potential project.

I got two packages today, and also got in a big shouting match with the customs lady. She tried to charge me $15 for the boxes, which is ridiculous, and I told her so, but she didn't budge, even after I yelled "I AM A VOLUNTEER FOR YOUR COUNTRY, LADY!" and "I'm broke" and "Shame on your family." I then gave her candy (thanks Jiyoung) and she laughed it off and let me go.
Thanks mom and Jiyoung for the packages. I love you guys soooo much.

On the bus up here some guy thought it was totally cool to sit next to me (totally NOT cool), and then start talking to me (worse than sitting next to me) and then asked me to get him a job in America. Totally serious. He honestly thought I'd get him a job. Ridiculous. I'm shocked none of the other women on the bus tried to get him to move, but I guess since I'm a foreigner, they didn't think it was that horrible. People can be so silly sometimes.

And to anyone who hasn't received an email response from me in a while, I suck at writing emails these days. Sorry. But thanks for emailing me!

The weather is still rather gross. It's cold at night, it's been rainy and depressing for two days, and the winds have picked up.

I haven't heard anyone here discuss the Palestinian elections. I'm not in a heavily Palestinian area, though, so I guess people don't really care.

Oh! The Karak distribution office of "El Rai," the national newspaper, started delivering one free "Jordan Times," the English version, to Safi everyday for me!!! How nice is that?? So I get the news, a few comics, and the crossword. CROSSWORDS. I missed them so. I still remember the day shifts at Old Glory, being so bored, and staring at the Post's crossword, asking customers for answers... Good times. Anyways, now I have no one to ask for answers, but they're pretty easy puzzles.

Kayte, my darling roommate from Gtown, wants to meet me in Turkey in May, and I'm super excited. I just hope I can afford it and save my vacation days.

Happy Birthday Jennifer!
It's King Abdullah's birthday on Monday, so happy birthday to Him, too! It's also a national holiday, followed by another on Tuesday, marking the Islamic New Year. Good times.

Hilary, it's good to hear that you're optimistic. We miss you and wish you were here! Chicago is having a really warm winter. It's like 50 degrees every day. I keep bracing myself for the biting cold but it never comes. Knock on wood. Anyway, let me know if you have a preference for bridesmaid dress colors. You're supposed to help choose! Otherwise you'll end up in BRIGHT ORANGE maybe. ;)
