The silence of the chickens....
No, no bird flu yet, but most of my Jordanian friends (coworkers, my taxi driver, and my landlord) are convinced bird flu is here, but the government is just keeping it quiet. All PVCs were just given access to Tamiflu, so I guess that's a sign of the inevitability of the bird flu's arrival. I personally don't play with dead chickens, but chickens roam very, very freely in Safi, and I often find myself accidentally stepping on chicken parts in the streets...so the possibility is there, I suppose.
I've had a rough couple of weeks. While my book club, English classes, and tutoring are all going really really well, the rest of my projects are struggling to get off the ground. Majeda seems less than interested in working with Habitat for Humanity, for reasons that are beyond me, and my cooking classes are cool only if we're making brownies or cookies, or something else fabulously sugary and 'American.'
I also almost got ripped off by two people who I trusted...I won't go into details, because this blog is being 'watched,' but the whole situation sucked, and even after I figured out that I was being taken advantage of, and stopped it, no one really seemed to care that I was almost ripped off!! It was depressing.
Also, two more volunteers left, one was a very good friend. Very sad.
On the bright side, however: In Service Training is next month, which means I can get out of Safi for a few days at the PC's expense. Also, the Israeli tv channels I get play "Monk" (which i just discovered to be a FABULOUS show) and "Sopranos" every night, unedited. And my favorite UAE channel is playing the Oscars live and unedited at 3am next Monday. Good times! My exercising is going really well, I'm getting pretty comfortable with pilates. Pilates, by the way, is awesome--if you haven't tried it, go! It's great.
And I got a lovely phone call from Marina this morning, which was a nice surprise, even though it was a good 2 hours before my alarm clock went off. Thanks again for calling!! It was so nice chatting with you.
And another apology---To all of you who have emailed me in the past month, I know I suck. I have barely replied. I'll try to do better.
Also, how come no one told me the Hoyas were doing so well this season?

i love you and miss you so much!
Hil,
Look on the bright side, Chicago yuppies pay big bucks for “free range chicken.”
Take care,
Dan Swift
Hil...I MISS YOU SOOOO MUCH!

ummm... you took my blue hoodie! ARGH! Do you know the fight I got into with Aparna over that? I thought she 'borrowed' it. Oh well. No worries, it is now yours (I bought another one at homecoming). Blue gtown hoodies rock and are the most comfortable thing in the world.
Where/when did you take it? I am so perplexed.
Hi hilary hartman. and Happy Birthday to you! I suppose better late than never, hmmm?
I finally got access to this incredible blog space and am having loads of fun reading all of your posts.
Glad to see that you're safe and can still have a humorous perspective over the ridic instability going on in the area you are currently residing. But you gotta bounce if this civil unrest continues to ramp up.
I miss you and would love to talk to you.
So pilates is the way to go? I'm trying to get into the classes at my gym but can't seem to get enough courage to step into the 'class room' for any of the classes im interested in (yoga, pilates, and boxing)... any words of encouragement?
Im home in rye for the weekend to spend some time with my mommy before she takes off to India. As a result, it enabled me to check my gmail for the first time in months. I cant access it from work, and dont have internet at home (I know, pretty lame). But I think I can access this blog from work, which is pretty siiiic.
there is really nothing new going on about me. i work. i sleep (sometimes). i work. i chib. i work. i watch gtown bball games. i work... your life seems exponentially more interesting
speaking of the hoyas, we've been pretty sic this year. While very frustrated that it is all happening the year after we graduated, at least we are regaining some prominence as a respected bball program. go JTIII. what i would have given to be at the duke game. And looking ahead, we have incredible recruiting classes for the next 2 years and should be quite strong in the coming seasons. BigEast tourney is coming up in a couple of weeks, followed by the dance - which we are almost assured to make (the only way we dont is if we lose our last game to USF and the first round game of bigEast tourney).
Ok hil... my dad wants his laptop back. must run.
hopefully, we will be in touch more often from now on!
bye hil
