You Speak Arabic Very Well
I was having lunch at this little cafe in Karak last week. The guys who owns it is a friend of mine and all the other volunteers in the region (there used to be 11 of us, now there are 4). Anyways, he asked me how the food was, and I said "oh its delicious, thank you so much" in Arabic. And he almost spits out his tea, starts laughing heartily, and says, "you speak Arabic very well!!" as if from that sentence, which is so basic, and probably wasn't even said correctly, he could detect fluency. Ridiculous. I did get many cups of free tea, though.
Speaking of ridiculous, all Jordanian public schools got an entire day off because of an eclipse. A solar eclipse. And it was cloudy that day in most of the country. The entire day off!
My center is at the Dana Nature Reserve today for a recycling/environment camp. I couldn't go, but I hope the girls are listening and stop throwing their trash on the street. Not likely. I was walking to the store with Nabila's kids, who were all eating ice cream cones, and each one of them threw their wrappers on the street. Just dropped it as they walked. I made them go back and pick it all up and put it in the dumpster, but they thought I was crazy, and don't like walking with me to the store anymore.
Ok. That's all I got.
Oh, it's April Fool's day, too.
I'm not sure what to do with that.

hahaha...i get that too; say one simple sentence correctly and a mofo thinks you're fluent! "You speak Korean very well" "Uh, no, but thanks anyways"
Miss you to death...love you more. PEACE, your bro...
you got me, bitch.. did you see the eclipse?
Hi Hil
I get that too, with kiSwahili! I know exactly 8 phrases (the people in the cafeteria teach me little stuff) and when I use any of them, people say "wow, you really speak kiSwahili well!" I think it just shows that people REALLY appreciate it when you try to speak anything in their language. I've never seen people's faces light up as much as when I speak one of my 8 phrases to them. It makes me want to take lessons, which I think I'm going to try to fit in to my schedule.
love,
mom
Seeing as you didn't give a shit when I replied to your eMail, thought I'd add this:
I got a job down south, so you'll be pleased to know I may be living in London by June. That means that you can visit me this time.
there's a public school in chicago that partnered with a school in amman this week, and they said on the local news that it's a better deal for the chicago school than the jordan school because "jordan takes literacy much more seriously than america." geez... that's sad!
